Books by Living Poker Legend Doyle Brunson
Doyle Brunson is hands down the most well known poker player in history. When the World Series of Poker first came about in 1970, Brunson already had fifteen years of experience under his belt as a professional poker player. In the early days of the WSOP, he dominated the tournaments, winning WSOP Main Event Championships in back to back years, and he’d eventually go on to win ten career WSOP bracelets. In 1988, Brunson was inducted to the Poker Hall of Fame, and in 2004, he was an inaugural member of the World Poker Tour’s poker walk of fame.

As accomplished as Doyle Brunson has been on the felt, his biggest contributions to poker came as an author. In 1979, Doyle Brunson published the first comprehensive poker course, originally titled How I Made Over $1,000,000 Playing Poker; but the book was later titled Doyle Brunson’s Super System – A Course in Power Poker (sometimes written as Super/System). Even though more than 30 years have passed since this book was first written, many of today’s top poker professionals swear by Super System and partially credit the books’ content for their success.
In October 2004, Doyle Brunson released a sequel to Super System appropriately titled Super System 2 – A Course in Power Poker which included topics missing from the original books, such as internet poker, television poker, an eight qualifier on high low games, triple draw etc. This book is as highly esteemed as the first and nearly all poker strategists will recommend it as required reading.

Additional Doyle Brunson Books
While Doyle Brunson is best known for his two Super System books, he has authored four other books which we’ll cover below.
Poker Wisdom of a Champion / According to Doyle (1984/2003/2008)
This book was first published in 1984 with the title “According to Doyle” in 2003, it was republished by Cardoza Publishing and titled “Poker Wisdom of a Champion”. In 2008, it was once again republished this time under the original title “According to Doyle”.
Name confusion and publishing info aside, this book is comprised of 47 short chapters where Doyle covers his gambling experiences beginning as early as the 1960’s. The book is well written and flows as if the reader is being taken back in time through a time machine with Doyle Brunson as the guide. As Doyle recounts the valuable poker lessons he learned over the years, his experiences are viewed first hand by the reader and the lessons learned are just as relevant today as they were then. This book is a piece of history, with a good vs. evil undertone and plenty of humor.

My 50 Most Memorable Hands (2007)
This book is a decent read for fans of Doyle Brunson. While there is not much in terms of strategy, the book has its place in history as he shares the 50 hands he memorizes most. Here, Doyle will bring to life the early days as a high stakes poker player which involved sidestepping police, hijackers and murderers. He competes for hands worth more than a million dollars, and he sweats out situations where his last dollar relies on the outcome of a card. If you’re a fan of Doyle Brunson, the old west (so to speak) and/or poker history, this book is a great read.
The Godfather of Poker (2009)
This book is the story of Doyle Brunson. Here you’ll learn about his good luck and bad luck, his triumph and tragedy as he survived whippings, gun fights, stabbings, mobsters, and murderers during his early days as a professional poker player in games run by organized crime. You’ll also learn how Brunson beat incurable cancer when his doctors told him he was drawing dead.
This books tells the true story of Doyle Brunson and other real life characters such as these World Champions: Johnny Moss, Amarillo Slim Preston, Sailor Roberts, Bill Smith, Jack “Treetop” Straus, and also, Pat Renfro, James “Tennessee Longgoodie” Roy, John “Austin Squatty” Jenkins, Doc Ramsey, Paul Harvey, Tuffy Hufstedler, George McGann, Joe Floyd, and Tooter Leyland, who robbed them.
If you’re a fan of Doyle Brunson or an “internet-day professional poker player” and want to learn more about the men who carved the way for what poker is today, this book is a must read.
Other Doyle Brunson Writing
Doyle Brunson wrote a book in 2005 on internet poker that received horrible reviews. Having read this book ourselves we can tell you that unless you’ve never used a computer and have no clue how to download internet poker software, we recommend you avoid purchasing, borrowing, reading or looking at the book “Online Poker: Your Guide to Playing Online Poker Safely & Winning Money”, as the book is nowhere near the high quality standard of Doyle Brunson’s other books, and its content provides little to no value.
If you’d like to keep up with Doyle Brunson’s current writing, he runs a great blog which can be accessed from his online poker site www.doylesroom.com.
