Doyle Brunson’s poker career began at age 19 when he was a semi regular in the illegal games held in backrooms throughout Fort Worth, Texas.
Eventually he began traveling with his friend Dwayne Hamilton where they met and became friends with Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts. This foursome travelled Texas and beyond playing in poker games ran by organized crime. This was the mid 1950’s to the late 1960’s back when poker was not socially accepted and it was not uncommon from players to be robbed and beaten. Doyle accounts several times where he was robbed at gun point, and because the games were illegal and ran by organized crime he had little recourse in the matter.
Life as a road gambler was a bit too much for Dwayne Hamilton and he moved back to Fort Worth while Doyle Brunson Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts teamed up. This trio pooled their money together for gambling and after six-years made their first trip to Las Vegas. It wasn’t long before their six-figure amount was lost in Vegas and the group split up as partners but remained friends.
Doyle Brunson returned to Las Vegas frequently and by the late 1960’s it became a second home to him, where he spent most of his time. When the World Series of Poker first launched at the Binions Horseshoe Casino in 1970, Brunson was fascinated and entered the WSOP Main Event each year, before winning back to back WSOP Main Event titles in 1976 and 1977. Brunson made additional WSOP Main Event final tables in 1980 (finishing second place to three-time champion Stu Ungar) 1982 (4th place) and 1983 (3rd place). Against much larger fields he went deep in 1997 (16th) and 2004 (53rd).
To go along with his two WSOP Main Event bracelets Doyle has captured eight additional WSOP bracelets, for a total of ten. This ranks him tied with Johnny Chan for second place on the all-time WSOP bracelet list, one behind leader Phil Hellmuth who has eleven bracelets. In addition the the WSOP bracelets Doyle Brunson also has a World Poker Tour Main Event title under his belt, which he captured in winning the 2004 Legends of Poker World Poker Tour Event, collecting $1,198,290 in what was the biggest ever WPT field at the time.
Doyle Brunson was inducted into the Binion’s Poker Hall of Fame (now ran by Harrah’s) in 1988, and joined Gus Hansen and James Gardner as the first members inducted into the WPT Poker Walk of Fame.
Today Brunson continues to play the biggest cash games in the world including the regular $4K/$8K mixed game at the Bellagio’s “Booby’s room”.
